Assignment 3

Narrative:

This math lesson will be taught to a group of 4th grade students in a math class who are learning to write and read multi-digit whole numbers by representing numbers in various ways including standard, written, and expanded form. These students are sitting at tables and they are grouped heterogeneously to correlate to Kagan structures and their math levels. They have a variety of academic levels ranging from High, High medium, low medium, and low. Students will use their prior knowledge from previous lessons about collecting and reading data to gather information using the internet from the U.S. Census Data on ten of their favorite cities in a state of their choice. Other prior knowledge needed to complete this assignment is how to make a spreadsheet in Google Docs which the students have made before.

Another perquisite would be that these students are familiar with how to label different columns in the table. The students will have access to the media center and computer lab throughout their research. The students will have learned how to use a search engine to ask questions and find out answers. These places could include places they would like to visit or live within the state they choose. These students have been taught how the different place values for 6 digit numbers. For each of the ten counties, the students must include the name of the county, the population in standard form, the population in written form, and the population in expanded form. Once the students have gathered this information, they will have to input the information into a table using Microsoft Word, compare the cities population data and put them in order from the smallest population to the largest population. The students will then pick one county from their list, and take the class on a virtual tour of the county using Google Maps.

Problem Statement:
Have you ever wanted to go on a vacation? Where would you go? If you could visit or live in any state in the world, where would it be? You will pick one state in the United States that you would like to visit or live in and pick 10 cities in that state. Using the U.S. Census Data http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/index.html#, you will research the population for those 10 cities and make an organized spreadsheet using Google Docs including the population written in expanded form, written form, and standard form. Once all of your data populations have been entered, you will need to order these populations in order from least to greatest. You will then be able to take your classmates on a virtual tour of your favorite city using Google Maps.

Competency Goal:
4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

Objective:Upon completion of the place value lesson, 4th grade students will use the data collected from the U.S. Census to create a spreadsheet using Google Docs and include the population of 10 cities within a state written in word form, standard form, and expanded form. The students must order these populations in order from smallest to largest with 100% accuracy.

Brain-Compatible Learning Principal

For this assignment, I believe that it incorporates the meaning and relevance principal as well as the choice principal. This assignment allows the students to think about what state that they would like to visit or possibly live in one day and collect data on that state. They are provided with the opportunity to research different facts about the state of their choice and see how many people live there. This also relates to the choice principal since they students have a choice in which state and city they choose.
